Lets' hope that the Brain trust has this one right

Ed At The Games
Well, well, the preliminaries are over, Team Canada has been totally unimpressive to this point and the vultures are starting to circle. But all will be forgiven and the back sliding in the media will be fast and furious if the Gretzky led staff have made the right decisions...that's one big Italian IF....the word here this afternoon is that the line up that has played all the games will not change, so no Staal, no Boyle, just more of Bertuzzi, McCabe and Nash....lets face it, these games, for Canadians, are all about hockey gold, and if Canada doesn't win today vs the Russians then it is all over and the reaction will be swift........ The boys in charge have announced no changes, so the message is that they were right all along and a couple of slip ups in the preliminaries were all just due to jet lag or some under done rissotto..well we'll see....a win today and then it may stop the second guessers for the moment a win in the semis and all will be forgiven,..... even a silver may be acceptable, given the strength and depth of the competition here....BUT a stumble anywhere between now and the Gold medal game and there won't be enough Lucky loonies ( or lire or euros ) to buy off a media horde and the fans at home who will question the roster decisions from now until Vancouver 2010....... so drop the puck and lets see who's right ......Ciao.....

Good question

Tom Carson in Milton
"What are the rules for playing the alternates in hockey? If the game against the Czechs doesn't mean anything perhaps it's time to give Staal and Spezza a chance."
Ed At The Games
The rule is that if a taxi squad player is added, then the player he replaces is done for the tournament. So if Bertuzzi, McCabe or Lecavalier were to be dumped, say in favour of Dan Boyle or Eric Staal, then that would be it for them for the rest of the Games.

Right On !

George in Fort Erie Ont.
"With Canada having so much depth in qualified players, think we should go with the first-time players? At this level they have all played in crucial games. Saying that, I believe we then would have a team as hungry as the Swiss and the Finns. Keep a leadership line and go with the young Canada. Geo.
Feels like we are watching the Leafs Pat, showing up for 10 mins a game."

Ed At The Games
George,...you couldn't have been more right on. I mean Eric Staal, Jason Spezza and Dion Phaneuf could all be on this squad, and surely would have made a difference vs. the Swiss and Finns (...embarrassing shutout preliminary-round losses, even though they really mean nothing )...to say that a player makes it to the NHL, but because he has not been to this type of tournament, to say they are a rookie liability, is a pile of crap and the brain trust here knows it, but they do not want to appear to be second guessing themselves....let's hope they are right...if not a lot of big egos will be shown the door.

hey Charlie !!!

Chas. Tachauer in Guelph, Ontario
"Hi Ed: The Tachauers are here! Charles, David and I are sending greetings from Guelph. We are enjoying your comments on the web page.
GO HABS GO. Doreen, Charles, David."

Ed At The Games
Hey Charlie...great to hear from you. Looks like Team Canada could use the "Flower" and Big Gainey, along with some of Scotty Bowman's magic...Go Habs Go !!

Yes Donald I have always been a jerk

Donald in New Glasgow,N.S
"Were you always a jerk or has it just become apparent to half the people in Canada since our woman hockey players put on the super entertaining show. Why don't you make some noise regarding the fact that the women's back up goalies do not all receive medals as with the men's backup goalies??"
Ed At The Games
Donald, if you took the time to really read what I said, then you would know that I totally support women's hockey. My beef is that the other countries are too far behind Canada & the USA in terms of ability and skill to make this event worthy of the Olympics....so whether the back up goalies get a medal or not is irrelevant, what is relevant is that Italy, the Russians, Swiss, Sweden and Germany can't field a competitive team...

Sorry, the bars in Davos are still the best

Paul in Toronto
"Hey Ed, are there any bars there as good as the Sport Hotel bar in Davos, Switzerland?

Gather it up, man!"

Ed At The Games
I have a pretty good idea that this question is from someone who not only has been to the bars during Spengler Cup in Davos, but probably has left with me from a few of them. So my answer is that all bars are good when you are with good people...the Italians seem to be a bit more intimate with the bar scene, but the ones I have visited here are "ALL GOOD"....oh baby !
