Don't panic about our Hockey Team......yet

Ed At The Games
The loss by our Canadian hockey team to the pesky Swiss should not be cause for much alarm. It was simply a case of the Swiss players being so jacked up (...on real emotion, not Sudafed...) to face the NHLers, that a combination of fear and the desire not to be embarrassed, resulted in them out-working the Canadians in every aspect of the game. And as we all know, no matter how many superstars you have on paper, the games are not played on paper, and the hardest working team always wins.....It was terrific to see the Swiss players, most of whom wanted to ask for autographs, realize what they had accomplished. For them and their fans it was like winning the Stanley Cup!!.....Let's just hope that the Canadian players and coaches don't take the rest of the countries they face so lightly, or Mr. Gretzky will have even more explaining to do...... Ciao for now

Security ....just enough to be normal

Ed At The Games
Since 9/11 the world has changed and the phrase "new normal" has come to mean that every public place has heightened security measures. I have no idea if it really makes any difference to terrorists that now we have to take our shoes off at airports, but the reality is that since the New York attack, security seems to be everywhere....However, here in Italy it's not what I'd call oppressive. The venues all have metal detectors, guards who patrol in twos and the usual group of checkpoints which make sure everyone has the correct credentials. The good thing is that the security is not an "in your face", constant reminder that this is a huge world gathering that would be a prime target for terrorists or political fanatics.....I have been to many sporting events since 9/11 and some of them have such over-the-top security measures that people spend more time getting checked and re-checked for nail clippers and bottles of water that it becomes a huge inconvenience and a waste of time. But gladly here it's subtle, effecient and just at a level that we have all come to expect.

"From what you've seen, what country have the best uniforms, outerwear, etc.?"
Ed At The Games
So far the best uniforms have been the Italians, they just have a sense of fashion and the colors of the vests and pants are very Euro-chic...there is no doubt that the worst uniforms are the Russians - they have these white snow suits with horrid rose-design wallpaper stuff all over them... just awful. The next worst are the USA, they basically wear the flag...I must say that the Canadians look pretty sharp.
