Wrestling Chat
Jon  Todays chat with Jon Waldman will begin in approvimately 10 minutes.

Jon will be in today to discuss everything wrestling, including DVDs, video games, collectibles and all the news and rumours from WWE, NWA-TNA and the past.
Jon  Todays chat with Jon Waldman will begin shortly. Please feel free to submit any and all questions.
Jon  Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to todays chat. Im Jon Waldman of the SLAM! Wrestling staff.

Todays chat will be an open forum, so feel free to ask any and all questions you have about the ring wars.

A bit of a background on myself. Ive been with SLAM! Wrestling since 2000, mainly doing profiles, DVD and video game reviews. Growing up in Winnipeg, I was mainly exposed to the WWF, Stampede, and the various Tony Condello promotions.

Feel free to submit any questions you have. Lets get things rolling.
Adam When do you think the Ultimate Warrior is going to come back?
Russ With the recent rash of wrestler deaths many of whom clearly were steroid abusers do you think the industry will begin to watch the drug use more closely or will guys like HHH keep taking several months off at a time to pump up with the juice only to line up a few years down the road to be the next tragic victim.
Jon  One can only hope it will serve as a wake-up call to the wrestlers who are using enhancers, but Its doubtful that anything will happen until WWE, TNA and other organizations get seriously tough on the use of steroids. There was a time that there was random testing done on wrestlers; I dont know if this is still done or not though.
Canadian Bulldog What do you think the chances of up and coming wrestler Stuart Stone making it on the indy circuit?
Jon  Im not familiar with Stone. If anyone in the chat can add insight into his abilities, please feel free to do so.

In general though, anyone can theoretically "make it" in the indy scene. Its just a matter of how dedicated they are and how much theyre willing to put on the line. Guys like Mike Modest, Chris Daniels and countless others have made successful careers on the indy scene by working and training like crazy.
Canadian Bulldog Do you think weve seen the last of Big Sex Killer Kevin Nash in the ring. Or what?
Jon  As much as we all would hope that to be the case, it most likely isnt.

Nash is one of those guys who will hang around no matter what. Promoters think he has drawing power, and will keep him going. Even if McMahon lets him go after his contract expires in Feb. 2004, I expect TNA to bring him in.
Michael As a wrestler, do you think that wrestling entertainment should be part of the blame that the fact is hundreds of childrens out there watching and doing these dangerously stuff at home just for fun?
Jon  Well, Im not a wrestler, but Ill take that question anyways.

Ive been talking about this for years. In fact, it was part of a thesis-type paper I co-wrote at the University of Winnipeg.

The blame almost completely falls on parents who do not regulate their childrens viewing habits, or explain the difference between fantasy and reality. What children see on TV should be totally monitored by their parents, no questions asked.
marty what ever became of the Dynamite kid. The former half of the british bulldogs. Is it true that he has become confined to a wheelchair due to a back injury?
Jon  As you mentioned, Dynamite is confined to a wheelchair. From what I understand he is back in England now.

Dynamite was a favourite of many growing up, and I certainly hope WWE puts a few of his matches on upcoming DVD releases so that new viewers can see his work.
mitchell Do you think that the undertaker will ever go back to the man from the darkside gimmeck
Jon  I certainly hope so Mitchell. Takers current "tough guy" gimmick, when you look at it, is pretty generic, and hes working off reputation. He needs to re-ignite himself, and a return to the darkside would defintely get him bigger pops.
M leafs One time I thought Sting might be going to be with WWE.Do you know anything? If he did they could bring back the NWO..maybe Nash,Micheals,Sting,Orten, and HHH. and heard Savage wants a match with Hogan, what do you think?
Jon  Apparantly the two sides (WWE and Sting) were at one time very close to making a deal. There was huge speculation that Sting would be appearing at Summerslam.

Soon after the rumours started, however, Sting made his first NWA-TNA appearance (via WWA). I think TNA is actually a better fit for Sting right now, and I hope he becomes a permanent part of their organization.
Saba Simba All of their stats are down. Why isnt the WWE doing something to improve their business?
Jon  Theres a million and one reasons why. Its funny; I talk about WWEs problems on almost a daily basis.

the problem is that McMahon thinks that throwing the same wrestlers at us over and over will solve the problem, rather than developing new stars or giving us who we want. The only wrestler whos totally new and been give a "god push" has been Brock Lesnar.

What needs to happen is for WWE to get rid of older talent, take a loss for a few months and then rebound like they did in the late 90s when they got rid of guys who couldnt draw anymore.
With all the content they own, why doesnt the WWE start a wrestling channel?
Jon  In theory they could, but that would mean going in as a specialty network. Many specialties (or digitical cable) networks have failed, and its a risky venture to try to do so.

What they should do is create retro programming for channels like ESPN Classics, or even a more basic cable network like TSN.
Vince What ever happened to these following stars, John Nord,Danny Davis (WWF REF), Hercules Hernendez, Paul Roma and last but not least the ever famous Johnny K-9
Jon  Admittedly Im a bit behind on the "Where are theynow" tracking, but Ill give it a shot.

Roma turned to pro boxing after his wrestling career. I havent heard his name in a while.

Davis, if Im thinking of the right one, is a trainer in OVW.

Hercules hasnt been heard from in a while.

Nord I believe is still doing the odd indy show.

Johnny K-9... youll have to forgive me. Im drawing a blank on that name.
Erick How did Vince get those muscles?
Jon  From what Ive heard McMahon is actually a gym-freak.

Honestly, the first time we saw Vince wrestling Austin, I thoguht for sure he was wearing a bodysuit.
Angel AM Do you watch as much wrestling as you used to...lets say...four years ago?
Jon  Honestly, I dont.

Part of it has to do with a lack of an interesting product, part of it has to do with less TV time, and a lot of it has to do with that Im out of university and now working. Its hard to give yourself time to watch TV when youre a freelancer.

I will say this though. I watch RAW, check the spoilers for Velocity and Smackdown. I actually find myself into Velocity more becuase they have some really good matches, such as Joey Mathews vs. Ultimo.
Elana Martinez I attended the WWE press conference in Toronto and it was so lame. I thought there would be a BIG announcement. They were just selling phones. Why does the WWE always disappoint their fans?
Jon  I was at that conference too, and I honestly felt bad that there wasnt a signing session. Trish and Rey both seemed to want to sign and take pictures, but its a matter of the WWE only had a space for a limited time.

I think the conferences are good, but they should do more (ie. singing sessions). Whatever the reason for it is, whether it is a PPV announcement or a promotional night, the days are called "press conferences" for a reason. Not to sound harsh, but the WWE is trying to do business. Letting the fans attend the conferences is very unique.
Jon  Honestly, Id have to say a cut-down version of Gift Shop by the Tragically Hip. The intro is slow before the big drum beats come in is a good way to build up the fans to a breaking point.
The Rocked Who are the best and worst wrestlers of all time...in your opinion?
Jon  its Top 5 time, brought to you by the genius Nick Hornby.

Best - Chris Benoit, , Rey Mysterio Jr. Bret Hart, Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat.

Worst - Kevin Nash, Charles Wright (Kama et. al), the Tulip (anyone remember West-Four?), El Gigante and anyone with the last name Goddwinn.
Yiiper What happened to Oz?
Jon  Oz is Kevin Nash.
Vince John

Who is John Heidenreich, I know that he wrestles in the WWE but where else have we seen him.

Jon  From what I know, Heidenreich was in OVW before being brough into WWE. From what I remember, he wanst even in OVW that long...
Greggie Oliver Hear of any WM 20 surprises. I heard tickets arent selling well.
Jon  Well Greggie, amidst all the speculation of former greats coming in, the only thing thats definite so far is that there will be an event at MSG that will feature WWE talent.

As far as tickets not going at all, I can confirm that no tickets have been sold in quite some time :-)
Zoe What is the most bloodiest match you have ever seen?
Jon  One of two matches immediately come to mind:

1> British Bulldog vs. Bret Hart In Your House. Bulldogs tights went from wite red and blue to just red and blue, and there was a literal pool of blood outside the ring.

2> Thrillseekers vs. Heavenly Bodies - Night of the Legends - Jerichos blood covered himself, his opponents, the ref, the ring, the floor, the barricade, the ropes... Chekc out my review for a full match description.
mitch what ever happend to taka michinoku
Jon  Last I heard he was back in Japan. Which promotion? I dont know.
Hippie Yippie Dont you think the WWE charges too much for their PPVs? What happened to the INYH ideas?
Jon  They definitely do.

They should charge less for the split-brand PPVs, because for all-intents-and-puposes, they are showing half of the roster, compared to the major shows.

The IYH concept was pretty hokey, and WWE basically realized they could make more if they had a PPV with name recognition. Randomly subtitiling an IYH PPV just didnt work.
Sieun A Who is your favourite diva of all time?
Jon  Another Hornby special. Here we go, in no particular order: Lita, Trish, Sunny, Elizabeth, Ivory
Simple Sin What do you honestly think of the brand separation?
Jon  I think in theory its a good idea. Then again, in thoery, communism worked.

The brand split could be working a lot better if its original intent - to make more room for new stars to shine - was working. Instead, were still seeing Triple H an Undertaker on top, only theyre not battling each other anymore.
Ziverk Why does the WWE present recycled material? Same wrestlers. Same feuds. Same rosters. Yawn.
Jon  Because they dont have anyone in the company who will present new ideas. The Wrestlers know any ideas they have will be shot down, so why bother?

The writing staff has to answer to McMahon, who still believes pushing the same people over and over will fix the problem.
TELEKA BROWN WHEN WILL I SEE THE WWE RAW SUPERSTARS AGAIN?
Jon  Best bet is to check wwe.com or ticketmaster or your local arena to see if there are any WWE events listed in your area.
Annie Gunn Which 80s star would you like to see come back?
Jon  Special Delivery Jones.

Honestly, I think it would be a good retro feel to see Ultimate Warrior back.

Id rather, however, wee more of their old matches, which is why Im really anxious to get more DVDs out there.
Mary-Kei What do you think about how they have altered Kane?
Jon  When I first saw it, I honestly thought it was a big "Hily Shot" moment. I mean honestly, who among us thought theyd EVER de-mask Kane.

I think Kanes been put with Shane-a-punum for too long, and his character is running dry. They need to give Kane a MASSIVE win at Survivor Series if they hope to slavage his character.
Jon  BTW, I dont think the post went properly, but those wondering abotu the Hip mention, it was because of this question:

If you were a wrestler, what would your theme song be?
From: Bob Mckoie
King Kong Why does Vince sit by and watch his company crumble? His dad would be pissed.
Jon  Honestly, I dont think Vince Jr. realizes just how dire the situation is. Ive heard too many "cycle" comments lately for anyone to be really taking the downturn seriously. I hope something picks up soon though.

As for Vince Sr., I imagine hes doing a corkscrew in his grave.
Jon  Were into hour 2 of the chat and still going strong. Keep the questions coming.
BMD What can you tell me about Shaniqua?
Jon  Shaniqua is former TE II champ Linda Miles.

Honestly, did anyone think that SHE would be the top TEer in the WWE right now???
Mr. X Who do you think will challenge the WWE?
Jon  TNA has the best shot of anyone now.

Its interesting. I dont remember if i head this on The LAW or on NHB Wrestling, but someone said a Lucha Libre promotion would go over huge in North America rihgt now, and I have to agree - its something completely different that wuld definitely spark some interest.
Stryker Which game system has the best wrestling games for it?
Jon  Good question.

Ive only played NES, SNES, N64 and PS2 wrestling games, so I cant give a full balance, but I have to say SNES had a solid line-up, as did N64. There arent enough wrestling games coming out now to make PS@ a contender for the title.
Lisa J. Where is Jeff Hardy? Because he is gone, I hardly watch WWF TV.
Jon  From what I last heard, Jeff is doing the odd indie show and ROH.

Word ahs ti that Jeff was backstage at RAW recently. If the rumours are true that Matt is headed there, I hope to god that they dont reform the HArdy Boyz. Matts really shined when given the opportunity as a singles star, and I hope he continues to be given a chance.
Miss Jean Why does the WWE keep grounding the womens division? Whenever it gets hot...they pull the plug on it.
Jon  Because theres still a North American mentality that women cant draw. Right now, Trish, Victoria, Lita and Molly are making RAW extemely watchable for me (and others), and given the right push (even some main events), they could be one of the big cogs in a WWE turnaround.
Zed is Dead Will there ever be a day when the McMahons dont dominate the storylines?
Jon  The only day that will happen is on a non-WWE programming day (ie. Wednesday nights on TNA).

As long as theres a McMahon wrestling company, theyll be on top. Even after Vince is gone, Stephanie will ensure the McMahon name gets top billing.

As an aside, anyone else wondering when Triple H will change his name to Paul McMahon?
Chyna Doll What is are some of the best wrestling games youve played? What about the Fire Pro series?
Jon  I have to say the best I ever played was No Mercy. I still play it every so often, even though my N64 is breaking down.

There are of course the classics such as Nintendo Pro Wrestling and Tecmo, but nothing beats the arcade version of WrestleFest.

As for Fire Pro, Ive only played one of their games. Theyre incredibly hard to find in North America, and I beleive theyre only available on Nintendo systems. I currently have a PS2, so if anyone hears about a Playstation Fire Pro game, let me know.
Rey Jr. Will wrestling ever return to the way it was in the 80s. I dont mean material. I mean a consistant product.
Jon  The only way Wrestling will return to the 80s-style is if it goes back into the territories for a few years then re-emerges with a new multinational product. The territories were able to feed at least an hour of TV a week, with WWF or NWA giving another 2, showcasing many of the old territory guys.

We might soon see this as the indies are gaining steam....
Zaaax What would you suggest the WWE to improve things. I mean, they have lost about half their ratings and the PPV numbers this week are sooo bad. I fear the firm is in trouble.
Jon  Give the McMahon family a vacation. Im not joking.

One of the biggest problems is Vince is overworked and depending too much on his older stars. The best thing he can do is take some time off, take a step back an look at his product objectively, see whats wrong, maybe scout the indies a bit, then come back re-freshed. I really believe WWE needs an off-season so the wrestlers, writers and everyone involved can re-charge their batteris and bring back fresh ideas.
Canadian Bulldog Do you think that Triple HHH is burying people because hes married to Vince MacMahons daughter?
Jon  Triple H is doing the same thing a lot of wrestlers did in their position - doing their damndest to stay on top. Hogan did the same thing, refusing to wrestler or put over guys like Dibiase or Hart because he knew they were better than him.

I think that the marriage has little to do with Triple H burying people, it just means he can whisper suggestions to Stephanie a little easier than he could before they started dating.
Jon  Once again, if youd like to ask a question, feel free to do so at anytime. All questions will be answered (as long as theyre kept clean :-) ).
Mike E. What do you think is the future of the WWE? Will they tank and reform into something else?
Jon  As long as the McMahons have money to burn, the WWE will never go under. Theyre not as low as the company was in 1996, so itll still be around for a few more years.

The biggest problem, however, is that if the ratings continue to fall, networks migh be hestitant to re-up contracts when they expire. In particular, Spike TV, who are running at least 4 hours of wrestling week right now. The think with Spike is theyre seeing that they can create their own shows such as The Joe Schmo Show and Most Extreme Eliminaiton Challenge and draw. They might take that into consideration when it comes time to renew their contract with WWE.
guida penta when are you going to bring sting in to wwe wrestling, we miss him he was great and still is all the good ones we need back, do not get rid of stone cold and for godsakes, keep Goldberg get rid of, the dark headed *diot, and Mcmahon let Linda take over thanks guida penta would like to be a wrestler my uncle was one.
Jon  Well, Im not with WWE so I cant bring Sting in :-)

Stings quite happy doing the TNA stuff, and I suggest getting their PPVs to see his stuff (or find some old WCW tapes).

As far as Goldberg, I agree he shou ldbe kept. Im not sure who you mean by dark-haired youknowwhat, and putting Linda on TV more would be a very, very bad ting.
Jon  As far as wanting to become a wrestler, check out the indie scene in your are, talk to the wrestlers to see which schools they recommend. Maybe your uncle could give you a fwe basic pointers as well.
Canadian Bulldog Why did Hulk Hollywood Hogan quit NWA T and A last week?
Jon  I hadnt heard that he had quit TNA.

From what I know, Hogan is getting surgery done, i believe on his knee. Hell be out of action for quite some time.
Oilers4ever Hey man,

If you were in charge of the WWE right now, what changes would you make in order to bring back the WWE back to the days of the late 90s.
Jon  Well, Id do what they did back then - re-invent the industry.

When the "attitude era" began, it was something that had not been seen on a national level. ECW is rightfully credited with bringing the style to widespread popularity in NA, but they did not have a full audience.

As mentioned before, one of the possibilities is a lucha-libre type promotion. you already have big names like Guererro, Mysterio and even guys like Jericho who could make such a promotion or format a success.
Adam I really do wish the Ultimate Warrior would come back he is a really good wrestler and i think that he would make a big impact on wrestling. Yea know what else i wish that would come back is sting he a good wrestler as well i certainly do wish that he would pick a fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin they would make an incredible match together that would be cool.
Jon  I think a lot of us would like to see Warrior back. Hes really one of very few guys that had a big name value "back in the day" that hasnt been back in wrestling in the last while.

As far as Austin vs. Warrior, the match would be pretty bad, given Austin condition and Warriors limited moveset. It would have to have the same build as Rock vs. Hogan if it was going to have any kind of success.
Michael are you happy continuing persuading your goal as a wrestler?
Jon  Honestly, Ive never even considered a wrestling career, same way I never considered a career in pro sports. Im more than happy to keep on this end of the barricade, being a fan and writer. To me, being able to write about the "sport" and being able to chat with the guys I watched then and continue to watch now is a bigger thrill than Id ever get actually competing.
Jon  Well, the queue is empty, and its time to close down todays chat.

Id like to thank everyone who participated. Whether you asked a question or not, it means a lot that everyone took the time to come out today. I love doing these chats and interacting with you guys; hopefully we can do this again soon. As always, feel free to e-mail me at jonathanwaldman@hotmail.com with your thoughts and questions. Im still interested in your DVD thoughts, specifically what youd like to see on a Bret Hart DVD. Please ensure that the subject line of your e-mail says "SlamWrestling" to make sure your mail gets through.
Jon  One other quick note before I head off. Be sure to keep checking SLAM! Wrestling, as next week Ill be presenting the Survivor Series Stat Pack, WCW/ECW Invasion Part II, and hopefully a DVD review or two in the coming days. Be sure also to check out SLAM! Collectibles for my look at the sports card world.

Until next time, keep it real.
