The Wrestling Show
John  Hey, folks. Welcome to the SLAM! Wrestling chat. We will be getting under way in a few minutes. A little on Mr. Waldman...Jon Waldman has been writing for SLAM! Wrestling since 2000. His main contributions to the site have been interviews with WWF/E and indy wrestlers, video game reviews as well as the occasional op/ed. Jon has been watching wrestling since his childhood, in particular WWF, WCW, ECW, Stampede and IWA Hardcore wrestling. Jon is also a columnist for SLAM! Collectibles.

Any and all questions about the industry, both inside and outside the ring will be answered. Other topics up for discussion here are video games and collectibles.
Jon  Hey guys, thanks for coming out today for the chat. I look forward to answering all your questions (well, at least the ones I can BS my way through :-) ). If you have any qs about the wrestling industry, wrestling video games or wrestling collectibles, feel free to submit them. JP, whenever youre ready, lets get things started.
John  I have to agree with Waldman on that one. Marvel Comics went through the same kind of fan-organized boycott in the 90s and the company stood up and took notice. Fans dont fully understand how much power they do have and what kind of influence they have over the WWE and the content...if they want to. It is up to the fans to make their voices heard if they want change to come about.
firebreaker do you think any other organization like nwa/tna or wwa will ever get a major tv market
Jon  Is this the REAL Firebreaker Chip...because if so...I was a HUGE, HUGE fan of yours. WWA...No. They are focused on international wrestling. Their promotion is done in Australia and I can only see them getting a deal there. As far as TNA goes, they have the best shot of anyone right now. They have to get something on cable or be syndicated but if you give them a couple of years, they will have a decent TV deal.
Nuke Jon... why do you think wrestling fans arent so receptive to Fleers WWE trading cards? They look great and have cool stuff like autographs and event-worn material...
Jon  The reason why is that wrestling cards havent been all that popular with the general trading card market. A lot of the cards are great from the samples I have gotten and they are really worth a second look. There are many fans who dont know about the set. Some promotion from the WWE would go a loooong way.
DTC What are your thoughts about the boycott of Raw that some online fans are arranging?
Jon  It is a good idea. It will show Vince just how important the fans on the Internet are. I believe he undervalues how important they are to the company. If a backlash happens, he will learn that they should listen to their fans not how like HHH and Bradshaw, who speak out against the Net.
Vince What ever happened to the MEAN STREET POSSE
Jon  The last time I heard of them, was in OVW. I think they were released in 2001 ior 2002.
John  Mean Street Posse? Who gives a crap? They sucked ass!
Mookie Who do you think would win in a Hell in the Cell match... Ted Arcidi or Outback Jack?
Jon  (Laughs!) I think given the fact that Arcidi cant move and Outback can walk around a bit...I would have to give Outback Jack the win in that match. I think that someone is working on the RD Reynolds fantasy match.
Joe Whats your opinion on Zach Gowen, and will he be successful in the wwe?
Jon  I havent seen any of his indie stuff to know what kind of performer he is. Unfortunately, I think Vince is just going to use him as a sideshow. I think his longterm value to the company is minimal.
John  Vince use handicaps in angles? You have got to be kidding me. Wash out your mouth and say ten Hail Marys. That Goldust persona is really tasteful.
John  In the end, it is the fans who lose out. The question I have is why the WWE continues to slag fans on the Internet and permit their talent to do so? That, I will never understand. Why attack the people who buy your tickets, merchandise and your PPVs? Dumb. Dumb.
Axl Rotten What is going on with Cyrus? The WWE should bring him back.
Jon  Right now, Cyrus is doing his column for The Sun and doing No Holds Barred radio show with Aiello. He is also doing so work with the indie feds in Canada and he is back in university. In terms of going back to the WWE, I would love to see him there. He has a great mind for the biz and his character would go over pretty well today.
Vince What ever happend to to Mean street posse.
Jon  WE TOLD YOU ALREADY!
What do you think will happen to lex luger---would vince touch him if he ever gets out of the mess hes in?
Jon  Knowing Vince I wouldnt be surprised if he gives Luger a shot if the WWE gets really, really desperate. Luger has yet to be convicted of anything and based on Vinces hiring practices (ie: Nathan Jones), I wouldnt be surprised if he brings him in for his name...if nothing else.
Sarah Sin Maybe this is too complicated a question but why cant the WWE get its act together?
Jon  A lot of it has to with many of the same problems that WCW had. There are too many people pulling powerplays behind the scenes and nobody is listening to the ideas of the wrestlers any longer (except for HHH that is). They are also not listening to their fans. If they were people like RVD, Booker and Benoit would be at the top of the promotion.
Vince This is more of plot for the WWE to use...Why dont they do an angle between Torrie Wilson and Sable teaming up against Nidia and Dawn Marie. Have Sable turn on Torrie and knock her out and cut her hair just like the Andre angle several years ago. This is sure to spice up the corporation.
Jon  They did a haircutting angle with Luna and Sable. Second, none of the performers listed would generate any king of publicity for the WWE. If they are going to do anything with the women, they really need to push them like they do on Raw as wrestlers and not just eye candy.
DTC John and Jon, are there any plans for you to write books, like Greg and the other John (Molinaro) did?
Jon  I would love to write a book at some point. Unfortunately, the wrestling book market is packed. Who knows? I just might write about another subject area..I am very happy that Greg and Johns books went over so well and I hope they will do others.
John  My three-year-old son is the Number One priority in my life right now. Yes. He is even more important than wrestling. Watching John and Greg go through the process, I know how deeply involved it is. It can dominate your life for a year or more. At the present, I dont have the time to dedicate to such a venture. If I did, I am not so sure I would write about wrestling. I would probably do a piece of horror fiction or a book of movie reviews (probably horror genre) as I have written film critiques for years for various publications. It will happen one day...but I need the time and energy at hand to do it properly. Thanks for asking.
Dungeoneer Do you agree with the "Top 100 wrestlers of all time?" rankings that put Bret Hart at 25th? Dont you think the Hitman deserves better?
Jon  In my own personal list, I would probably put Bret in the top five but I dont know much about the international wrestling scene as John Molinaro does. I would also base my list performers that I have seen while Molinaro was writing about wrestling legends. As far as Bret being low on Molinaros list, I think it is a bit surprising but Molinaro has his reasons for doing so.
John  Ah, that Molinaro is just a punk anyways. Just kidding. He is a good friend to us all and we miss him around these parts.
Who is the worst wrestler--Goldberg or Steiner?
Jon  Oh, boy. I would have to say...Goldberg is the worst ACTUAL wrestler but in terms of performance Steiner is the worst of the two.
Bin E. Laden Why wont the WWE listen to its fans?
Jon  What are you talking about? The WWE not listening to its fans? Havent you read those surveys? In reality, I think Vince put up the surveys to make people think he was listening yet much of the product has not reflected the popular belief of the fans is. They may have taken a positive step by making the main event last night as Hardy versus Rey Mysterio Jr. but they still have ways to go.
Macho King Does the WWE still have a ban on you and other Net sites? If so, I dont understand why they would when the company is in serious trouble.
Jon  Yes, they do. It is really unfortunate because they can use as much PR right now as they possibly can get.
Skunky What do you think of these brand-only PPVs?
John  Waldman: I think it is a good idea. It will encourage better storyline developement. I think it will be an interesting experiment. It will give wrestlers a better opportunity to perform on such a big stage.
John  I think it is just the WWE management are very arrogant and prideful people who wont admit something has flopped. The way the company is, the McMahons are surrounded by people who wont be honest and question the McMahons bad decisions. Because of that environment, change and improvement rarely occurs. The only way the WWE is going to change for the better is if the McMahons loosen their control or remove themselves from the company.
Ian Rieling Who is the best Canadian wrestler out there? It seems as if the Canadian wrestlers stay in tune with the fans better. Is that true from your experience?
Jon  In terms of wrestling, I would have to say Benoit but overall performance...I would say Jericho. In regards to the Canadian connection with the fans, I think alot of it is that they were trained by people who know the business really well...guys like Stu Hart and Tony Condello. They really put an effort into reminding their students to interact well with the fans and give them what they wanted.
Singapore Cane I love your game reviews. What are your favourite wrestling games? Any news on future releases?
Jon  Thanks for the compliment I am glad that you enjoy reading my stuff. My favourite wrestling games are No Mercy, Smackdown! Shut Your Mouth and the old WrestleFest arcade game. As far as new releases, I believe the next game is GameCubes WrestleMania 19. There is also a backyard wrestling game which is coming out in the next few months.
Is Mr. America really Hulk Hogan?
Jon  I am pretty sure that Mr. America is Hulk Hogan but I guess we will have to tune in and watch to find out.
robert verdon With Smackdowns signing of Ultimo Dragon, and having a few high flying cruiserweights, do you think there is a chance they will bring more Japanese Cruiserweights or sign Sabu?
Jon  They wont sign Sabu. He has had too many problems in the past. Regarding other Japanese wrestlers, I would love to see them bring in more of the lighter guys. I think there is a strong possibility with the PPVs, that we will see more cruiserweight action but I think they will bring in more of the recognized names like Jushin Lieger or Mexican guys like Psychosis before introducing people who are completely new.
John  I am glad that someone else is noticing that Smackdown! is looking more like Thunder every week.
Aladdin I am really pissed at good ol JR for a number of reasons. I want to ask you about: first the kind of language he uses calling wrestlers SOBs and his hypocrisy, calling everyone the "greatest of all time"? Who is the greatest, JR?
Jon  Regarding J.R., I think his quality has gone down in recent years. I understand that he has to tow the company line and put over wrestlers but his heart really doesnt seem to be in it any more. As far as the greatest goes...here is a top five list...In no particular order...Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Ricky Steamboat, Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels.
Blue Boy This may seem like a strange question but Id like to ask: there are some "adult" movies written and directed by a Brad Armstrong...No relationship to "the" Brad Armstrong the well known wrestler?
John  Dont ask me how I know this...but...they are not the same person. Trust me on that. Not that I have ever seen anything Brad Armstrong has produced and directed. Really. Its true. Its true.
Jerry Seinfeld Name the top three top unsigned wrestlers in North America at this point.
Jon  In terms of unsigned (as not by WWE)...Amazing Red, Chris Daniel and Raven.
Jon  Thats it for today. Thanking for sending in your questions. I look forward to chatting with you guys again soon and feel free to email me any other questions. I will answer them. Thanks again for supporting us and the site.
