The Wrestling Show
Moderator  The SLAM! Wrestling chat will be
starting in just a few minutes.
Moderator  John Powell here. This is our first
chat since the SLAM! Wrestling band
had gotten back together. On behalf
of everyone, I would just like to
thank all of you for your continued
support of us and the site. We are
so very fortunate to have such loyal
readers as yourselves.
Moderator  This is a little test of our new
chat system. There is no real topic
tonight so feel free to ask what
you wish. The floor is open. Also,
there is no time limit either. As
long as there are good questions I
would be glad to answer them as long
as my fingers dont fall off first.
Moderator  Without further ado, I am John Powell
the Co-Producer (I guess youd call
me) of SLAM! Wrestling...the other
being Greg Oliver of course. Fire
away folks!
Muskrat How long have you been a fan of wrestling, what got you in and what are you favourite memories of it?
Moderator  Great question, Musk. Well, for
starters I am 34. My grandfather
introduced me to wrestling at Maple
Leaf Gardens when I was like 7 or so.
So, you do the math! :) What got me
hooked at that age? The ability of
the talent and the themes of good
versus evil. I was and am a big comic
book fan...so wrestling kinda fit
right in there with Spider-Man, Daredevil
and the X-Men. Some of my favourite
memories all have to do with sharing
something wonderful with my grandfather
who died when he was in his fifties.
It is kinda sad knowing that I wont
be able to share wrestling with my
son until he gets older because of
some of the mature content.
Billy Can you tell us anything new about Lizs death?
Moderator  Nothing other than what we have posted
on the site. Apparently, Elizabeth
was taking pain killers and drinking
that night. She seemed to experience
problems when she sat down to eat.
It could have been the mix of medications
and the booze...or she couldve
choked. We wont know the true answer
until all of the results come back.
Whatever the cause, her death is very
unfortunate and has touched many
people deeply.
DTC Will WWE exist after October 25th or will it change into Triple H Inc.?
Moderator  Hey DTC, you arent the only one who
feels that way. You have to wonder
about a company that is in dire
straits and continues to push a main
event storyline that fans dont want
to see. These days I am really
wondering what they could be possibly
thinking. Just look at the Judgment
Day card so far. Is that the line-up
of a company who wants to bring fans
back? Hmmmm.
Tony What other "old timers" do you think the WWE will bring back?
Moderator  I have nothing against "older"
talent coming back as long as they
can still go in the ring. I guess
my biggest wish is that Ricky
"The Dragon" Steamboat could return.
I dont know if that is in the cards
though. I am glad to hear that the
Road Warriors could possibly be
returning. I just hope they are in
good condition to function well. They
sure do bring excitement with them.
Bobby Heenan might be another great
addition. Harley Race and Terry Funk
are personal favs too.
hulkhogan who is mr.america
Moderator  Nice try, Hogan. You should really
take our Smackdown! columnists advice
and sue Mr. America for copyright
violations. Give Vince a shot for
me when you see him next.
Moderator  By the way, as you all may know
Dale Plummer is our newest addition
to SLAM! Wrestling and is doing a
fine job with the Smackdown! reports.
Gotta love that guys sense of
humour.
DTC Does WWE consider last weekends tour of Ontario a success? Are there any plans to run Kitchener and Oshawa again or will we have to wait another 9 years?
Moderator  I am not sure. We will have to see
what the WWE has up their sleeves.
I hope that it doesnt take them
another billion years to come back
to those locations. There are some
truly rabid fans up there.
Vince Mr. Powell
Seeing as to how Hulk Hogan and Rowdy Roddy Piper are back is there any chance that we the people could see the Macho Man appear at any time
Moderator  He would be top on my list. Macho
is my fav of all time. I guess the
door is open for him. Based on what
he did in WCW, he still has the
ability to really put on a good show
in the ring. Question is...what do
they do with him? I would love to
see Macho back again. Oh, Yeah! I
would think though that wrestling
is the last thing on his mind at
the current time.
Aladdin Is Sting coming to WWE
Moderator  The rumours are flying arent they?
The biggest problem with Sting coming
to the WWE is that sometimes their
product goes against his personal
beliefs as a Christian. I would
assume because Goldberg and Michaels
had the same questions about
participating in the WWE but are now
there...that may open the door for
Sting to reconsider things. My best
guess is that if he is given
some creative control...there is no
reason why he cant come to the WWE.
Sheena How do you think the WWE is going to handle the Confidential piece on Miss Elizabeth and Lex. Judging from past Confidential episodes, nothing good can come from this. The piece will simply serve as a sleezy expose and she deserves better than that.
Moderator  Well, it is hard to criticize a
product before you even see it. I
would hope that the WWE is sensitive
to the situation and airs a very
fitting and respectful tribute to
the First Lady Of Wrestling. If they
dont, you can bet there will be
backlash like you wouldnt believe.
I have a feeling that they will do
a proper job despite what they have
aired in the past. Lets wait and see
what they come up with. Thats only
fair.
sharif We heard alot about Bret Hart coming back...is there any truth to that?
Moderator  Though Bret himself admits that he
and Vince are on better terms, I
really doubt we will ever see Bret
back in the WWE. He was offered a
chance to appear at WrestleMania
and sock McMahon in the ring and
he declined. I know that recently
there have been people appearing
in the WWE who said they would
never go back but Bret is an
entirely different case.
I Miss Bret Does anybody have a problem with Sable being back
Moderator  I do because I cant stand her.
My view of her is that she is a
hypocrite because of how she left
the WWE in the first place. Maybe
the Million Dollar Man was right.
Maybe everyone does have their
price.
The KR Kid Thanks for this opportunity! I think one thing the WWE should do now to boost ratings is bring back more wrestling managers/valets such as they are doing now with Teddy Long. I think people underestimate how integral characters like Bobby Heenan, Jimmy Hart, Slick, Mr. Fuji, and the late Miss Elizabeth were back in the past. I would love to see past greats like Ted D. (the Million Dollar Man$$$) and Mick Foley come back in such a role. Your thoughts???
Moderator  You are very welcome. Thanks for
the continued support. I couldnt
agree more with you if I tried.
I miss the old days when managers
were essential to the biz. They
made for great storylines and
rivalries. I dont know about you
but I am sick of the GM versus whomever
angles. They have been done to death
I much perfer the old days when
you saw someone like Jack Tunney
very rarely and when you did...he
had something very important to say.
His appearances meant something and
carried weight.
Jeremy I really like your new columnist, Jason Clevett. Any plans to have other fresh blood coming to the site?
Moderator  We are always looking for quality
people who will do quality work.
In fact, one of the plans is to
open the editorial slot again to
our readers. We have always believed
that is an important forum for fans.
Right now, the SLAM! Wrestling staff
is a hard-working and dedicated group.
So, we are always looking for new
people who can bring something
imaginative and creative to the table.
Kris I was wondering what your opinion was of Miss Elizabeth and her contributions to the sport. I was a huge fan and was very disappointed that the WWE hardly even acknowledged her death.
Moderator  When I was a teen, I adored Liz.
Now that I am older, I respect
the way she handled herself and
the character she portrayed. She
had more poise and grace than any
of the so-called "Divas" we see
today. So many angles were built
around her and that is a tribute to
her popularity and skills as a
performer. As far as wrestling
personalities go, she is right up
there with others in the 80s like
Hogan, Savage, Andre...etc. I think
the WWE didnt really do much to
acknowledge her death because it is
a very touchy situation. Perhaps they
feared bad publicity. I am not sure.
Perhaps they feared that if they
did a segment on Liz that some people
would say they were capitalizing
on her death. That would be a valid
concern. I think you are right though.
They should have done more than they
did. Even if it was just clearing
the ring at the end of the show,
putting her picture on the Titantron
and having a few moments of dead air
and silence to end Raw.
Razor Hi there, what are the chances of Scott Hall retuhning to the WWE?
Moderator  I REALLY doubt it. He has some
personal issues to work through and
the WWE doesnt need any more turmoil
than they already have. He is a
fantastic talent to be sure. It is
just sad that his personal problems
always seem to get in the way.
It is my hope that he will triumph
over them one day for his familys
sake.
Muskrat Which young star, or stars, do you see as the future main eventers for the WWE?
Moderator  Good question. The talent pool sure
is packed right now across the
board. In the WWE, the problem is
that Vince McMahon has this stoopid
notion that BIG GUYS deserve the
push as main eventers. That really
bothers me. I personally would rather
see guys like RVD, Booker T and
Chris Benoit get those spots. Younger
guys I like? Billy Kidman.
The Hurricane. Matt Hardy has done
a kicking job with his new persona.
One person who definitely get one
of those top spots is Shawn OHaire.
You can bet he will be facing Lesnar
very soon.
lonewolf first of all thanx for all the hard work you guys at Slam! are doing, it really shows. Do you think that WWE may try something like bringing back Scott Hall and reforming the nWo?
Moderator  Hey, man. You are very welcome.
Sometimes we stumble a little but
trust me...we always try our best
to provide our readers with the
best content we can. Without your
support there wouldnt be a site,
so it is we who should be thanking
you. No, that isnt some cheap pop.
Thats the honest truth. I dont think
Hall has a chance of returning.
I still cant believe how the WWE
blew the nWo angle. I mean, it was
pre-packaged for them and everything.
How could they screw that up? They did
and that just goes to show you how
crappy their current management is.
I wouldnt mind a return of the nWo
but I would think thats kinda hard
now with the failed "lethal poison"
angle. Never say never though.
RF What do think of John Molinaros top 5 wrestlers of all time: Flair, Thesz, Rikidoan, Inoki and Hogan. Any quibbles?
Moderator  I am kinda biased. I count John as
one of my best friends. He carries
with him alot of integrity and
honesty. He brings those qualities
to whatever project he is working
on. As far as his picks go, I
think he has gotten a raw deal from
some fans out there. Though I do
argue with the placement of some of
his choices...it is all subjective.
Knowing the amount of effort and time
he put into his book, I understand what
a labour of love it was for him. I
think what he tried to do is give
an overall perspective of the
industry as a whole...not just what
fans see America and Canada. He
brought a wealth of knowledge to the
book and also a broader understanding
of the industry. There is a whole
wide world out there and sometimes
it takes a bit of digging to
appreciate how powerful the
contributions are by others in
countries other than the U.S. and
Canada.
Hitman 4 Life Right now or even in the very near future Im hoping a new invasion angle is built, since most of the main eventers from WCW are under contract, why not? Or maybe try to form a new Faction like the 4 horsemen, NwO, DX or even the Nation of Domination with Teddy Long as their recruiter...
Moderator  The WWE has to do something. They
are floundering right now. I dont
think it is a matter of tinkering
here and there. I believe they
have to go back to the drawing board
entirely. I agree. Faction warfare
can work if done correctly. A new
Four Horsemen could be interesting.
I just wouldnt want the WWE to
turn into what we saw in the 90s
with the Nation and all the rest
of the crap that went on when WCW
was laying the Smackdown! on the
WWE.
Muskrat What is your opinion of the brand extension and do you like where its headed?
Moderator  I thought it was a bad idea from
the start. It really limits the
creativity of everyone involved.
For example...hasnt Triple H
beaten the entire Raw roster by
now? I mean come on. It is the same
old match-ups and feuds almost
every week. What the WWE needs to
do is pare down their roster and
build strong feuds and angles with
the people they have. Repeatition
is not going to keep the mainstream
viewers around.
Jeschulz83 Will NWA TNA be getting a new deal soon? I like to see some competition for WWE so they stop sucking.
Moderator  Word has it that TNA has already
been offered numerous deals from
numerous networks but the details
of said deals havent been what
they are looking for. To show you
how serious they are about putting
a television deal together, they
have hired a former top gun at TNN
to negotiate any deals for them.
If TNA keeps up the quality shows
they are putting out, it is only
a matter of time before they
challenge the WWE. You are right.
It would be good for the biz because
as we have seen...the WWE just sits
on their butts when there isnt any
competition around. That lack of effort
and shabby attitude should anger every wrestling fan out there.
charles goldberg and austin???? is it gonna happen?
Moderator  I really dont know. Austin isnt in
the best of shape. He has even
admitted so himself. Anything is
possible though.
STEVE THORNTON If Bret the hit man Hart WRESTLED HULK HOGAN WHO DO YOU think would win.
Moderator  Wow. You got me. Based on his
condition, Bret would probably
kick his ass with all those
submission moves. Hogans bad
knees might do that snap...crackle
...pop thing. I would place my
money on the Hitman. Hogan is past
his prime.
Mighty Marty Michaels What is the status of Gail Kim in the WWE? I know she wrestled some house shows late last year early this year, but that was it. Will she be appearing on WWE tv in the near future?
Moderator  I believe so. They are probably
just giving her some added training
and waiting for a good time to
introduce her. I dunno.
Little Poppa Pump Any truth to the rumour that Trish Stratus is engaged to someone from Torontos City Tv channel?
Moderator  She claims not to be involved with
anyone at the present time. City
TV? I have heard some sick rumours
about her and Ed The Sock...but this
is a family show and I cant get into
that here.
DTC Is John Molinaro returning to SLAM! Wrestling soon?
Moderator  John now works for another media company...namely the CBC. He
obviously has commitments there and
is progessing in his chosen point
of interest right now. Greg and I
remain close friends with John...so
anything is possible. Greg and I
respect the path John is following
now and support him fully. No
matter what. We will always be the
best of friends. We will have to see
what the future holds.
maskedman Why on earth would WWE bring back The Road Warriors? Its not 1985 anymore, no matter how hard they try to make it so.
Moderator  The Road Warriors are big names in
the industry and the WWE is trying
to lure back those mainstream or
older fans who have tuned them out.
I reserve judgement on LOD. My
policy has always been..it is not
someones age...it is whether they
can still go or contribute in a
meaningful way.
Miss Kitty Which WWE wrestler do you think the Intercontinental Title would benefit the most now that it has been brought back?
Moderator  Everyone. The title should never
have been phased out to begin with.
It gave some main event status to
guys who arent built like tanks.
I would assume that RVD, Jericho,
Booker, Benoit and younger guys
like The Hurricane could really
be boosted with such a title in
place.
LordCCnWo If you were to take a wild guess, when will the next boom period start for the WWE?
Moderator  Whenever they get their act
together and start listening to
their fans again. They also need
some really hot angles. The WWE
product needs some serious
re-tooling...from the bottom all
the way to the top. Some real
creativity wouldnt hurt either as
well an end to the WCW-like
backstage politics.
Captain confused I hope Heidi wins Survivor Amazon. Oops, sorry, wrong chat.
Moderator  Hey, Bozo. She was rightfully
kicked out last night. Matt is the
winner anyway...at least thats
my take.
Jeschulz83 I recently went to the WWEs website to offer my feedback on a weak episode of Raw. I was very displeased when I discovered that this section of the website no longer exists, and WWE even posts a statement saying that the opinions of WWE fans will not be listened too. And the WWE wonders why they are in a downward spiral. Why did they stop listening to the fans?
Moderator  I dont know if that is true but if
so...that is very troubling indeed.
Whatever organization you are...if
you stop listening to your customers,
readers...whatever...you are digging
your own grave. It is not time for
the WWE to be wildly experimenting.
Give the fans exactly what they
want and throw in some risky angles
here and there. The only way the
WWE will get back on the right track
is to pay attention to the people
who matter the most in the whole
equation...the fans. Without them,
there would be no WWF or anything
else for that matter.
Moderator  Though I would love to chat longer,
I am afraid that is all the time
we have for now. Thanks to
everyone for tuning in and participating.
It has been a blast. Just so you
know, these chats will soon become
a regular deal and will be featuring
superstars you know and love in the
near future. We appreciate the
support and encouragement. Have a
great weekend everyone!
