The Skinny

An explosive skater with sharp offensive skills and a sneaky-quick drive, Sykora was the first of promising youngsters in New Jersey looked upon to help fill the void left by Doug Gilmour's departure (then to Chicago, now with Buffalo) before 1998-99 began.

Sykora's a genuine finesse player who needs the freedom to open up a game. When he doesn't play at centre, Sykora is shifted to either wing in order to spread the offence around a little. Sykora will be great once he finds that crucial level of consistency.

If 1998-99 is any indication, Sykora, who enjoyed his breakthrough year, will enjoy an extremely productive career in the NHL. Helped form quite a unit alongside Patrik Elias and Jason Arnott at the end of 1998-99. All three players, somewhat slow off the gate in 1999-2000, were once more skating hard and difficult to contain as the halfway mark came around.

MISSING YOU! Was Sykora happy to have buddy and preferred linemate Elias back in the lineup after a holdout? Well, yes! Sykora scored goals in each of the next two games. An exceptionally gifted player, Sykora got off to a laborious start in 1999-2000, only one goal in his first nine games.

INJURY LOG*:

Bio

A finesse player blessed with quick hands, feet and brains, Sykora broke through in 1998-99, amassing 29 goals and 72 points in 80 games. Despite some inconsistencies, Sykora showed flashes of brilliance. He especially clicked well with Jason Arnott and Patrik Elias. Sykora began strutting the stuff many observers always thought he was capable of near the 25-game mark. Part of it had to do with him remaining healthy.

The New Jersey Devils were anxiously waiting for the former first-rounder's true emergence as a NHL first-liner since the day he stepped in as a rookie in 1995-96, earning 42 points in 63 games and a berth on the NHL all-rookie team. As a sophomore, Sykora unfortunately visited the doctor's clinic because of injuries, sat in then-coach Jacques Lemaire's doghouse for a while, and played cards during AHL bus rides, where he was sent for conditioning purposes.

The talented Czech stepped onto the pro scene as a 17-year-old teenager with the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL in 1993-94, and scored 29 points in as many games.
