The Skinny
Hot, not! Hot, not! That's been Brunette in 1999-2000!
Brunette was always projected as having solid goal-scoring potential. A former prospect with the Capitals, Brunette has found a home ever since expansion re-opened its doors.
Strongly built, Brunette thinks like a goal-scorer, but needs to eliminate his streakiness and continue improving his foot-speed somewhat in order to be a legitimate NHL scorer for many years to come. Willing to pay the price in front of the net, Brunette is less willing in defensive situations.
BREAKTHROUGH, FINALLY? Often maligned because of poor skating, there's no doubt Brunette knows what to do when deep in the offensive zone and close to the opposition net. A former 162-point performer with Owen Sound of the OHL, and a 94-point man with Portland of the AHL, Brunette, 5-5-10 in the first six games of 1999-2000, was already on track for his breakthrough season in the NHL. Finally, some said! Entered the second half playing alongside rookies Patrik Stefan and Dean Sylvester, which many observers in Atlanta project as their main go-to line in 2000-2001.
1998-99: Brunette was inconsistent in his first go-around as a NHL regular with Nashville in 1998-99. He quickly established himself as the first-line left winger, but slumped badly in the second half.
Bio
Brunette has the tools to succeed, but needs to improve his skating ability and consistency. A solid playmaker from the wing, Brunette could be a tonic for the offensive woes of the first-year franchise.
In fact, 1999-2000 marks the second consecutive season in which Brunette joins an expansion club. The solidly-built winger recorded 11 goals and 20 assists for the Nashville Predators in 1998-99.
Drafted by Washington in 1993, 174th overall, Brunette enjoyed his finest output in the NHL as a member of the Capitals in 1997-98 when he collected 11 goals and 12 assists in just 28 games.
As a junior-aged player with the Owen Sound Platers in 1992-93, Brunette led the OHL in goals (62), assists (100), and points (162) in just 66 games.
