The Skinny

Always considered a backup goaltender -- aside from a one-season stint with the Flames in 1998-99 --, Wregget is now in his mid-thirties and has battled a bad back in recent years.

A solid goaltender nonetheless throughout his career, Wregget left a No. 1 job in Calgary to join the contending Red Wings and act as backup to Chris Osgood. Wregget doesn't expect to handle the brunt of the work, but is expected to offer top-notch performances when called upon.

Bio

The Calgary Flames, unhappy with their shaky netminding, were certain that Wregget, their new man between the pipes as 1998-99 began, could make the difference and lead them to their first playoff berth since 1995-96. Unfortunately, injuries hampered Wregget's contributions and the Flames narrowly missed the post-season, again.

The Flames had acquired the NHL veteran during the 1998 off-season in a trade that sent German Titov (now with Anaheim) and Todd Hulshko to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wregget played a lot early in 1998-99 and was considered the Flames' MVP performer during the span, but he left an early November contest because of his back and missed the next 41 games.

Wregget was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1982, 45th overall. He spent five-plus years with the Toronto organization before he was shipped to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1989. He then headed to the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of a multi-player deal in 1992, just in time to help the Pens retain the Stanley Cup for a second straight season.

The highly competitive and stand-up goalie, who signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Detroit Red Wings during the summer of 1999, led the NHL with 25 wins in the strike-shortened 1994-95 season.
