The Skinny
A sound positional rearguard, York is the perfect defensive partner for a Wade Redden or Chris Phillips.
York now plays a much more consistent brand of hockey and contributes to the offence more than he used to in the past. Often overlooked but highly effective, York is not solely a one-dimensional defenceman who only plays it in his own end. Aggressive, but not overpowering, York doesn't mind rubbing elbows, either!
OVERWORKED: In early December, York and teammate Redden were feeling the supplementary workload the injuries to blue line mates Sami Salo, Janne Laukkanen (now with Pittsburgh) and Igor Kravchuk had freed up, and it showed in their play. Fortunately, the situation was only temporary... In late February, York, whose name was oddly brandied about in trade rumours, was temporarily separated from Redden, his usual defensive partner.
INJURY LOG*:
Dec. 11 to Dec. 16 - Groin (missed 3 games)
* as reported by the NHL.
Bio
York found a home when the Ottawa Senators inked him to a two-year deal in July of 1997. An offensive defenceman in junior, York is mostly known as a defensive type in the NHL.
Nonetheless, York enjoyed his finest offensive season in 1998-99. York, who once registered a 93-point season while with Windsor of the OHL in 1990-91, finished the season with a 4-31-35 offensive slate and a plus-17 mark in 79 outings.
York began his NHL career with the Detroit red Wings on a blue line corps which had no room for young defencemen. He gained valuable experience and regular ice suiting up for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1995-96, contributing 24 points in 79 regular season games, and finally demonstrating that he belonged in the big leagues.
Traded to Ottawa just days before the 1996-97 season, York got off to a rough start, but nonetheless slowly emerged after being thrust into a more prominent role when defencemen Sean Hill (now with St. Louis) and Stanislav Neckar went down with season-ending knee injuries.
After being drafted 129th overall by the Red Wings 1990, York shuttled back and forth between the AHL and the NHL, and racked up some impressive statistics in the minors along the way. He was named to the AHL's first all-star team as a member of the Adirondack Red Wings in 1994, who won the Calder Cup a year later with York playing an important role.
